We have some fun news to celebrate today! Joe, our piano man, participated in the Minnesota Music Teachers Association (MTGA) piano contest this winter/spring and he made it to the state finals. Normally the finals would be held in-person in front of a judge at the University of Minnesota. This year, COVID-19 effectively took care of that. Instead, students videotaped their performances and submitted them for judging.

We just heard from his piano teacher today that Joe was one of the select students who won the state finals competition!

What does that mean? Well … typically there is an honors concert in Minneapolis in June with all the winners. We don’t know if that will actually happen or not. Regardless, we’re so proud of all the time and effort Joe put forth since last fall to work on his song — and his mental agility for staying strong. (Imagine practicing the same song for MONTHS — tweaking the smallest details — as you get ready for the regional finals first and then state finals a few weeks later!)

Way to go, Joe!!

Here is his audition video … and I can honestly say Teacher Man and I have never tired of listening to his song. πŸ˜€ We hope you enjoy it!

  1. He is so talented and hard-working. This is excellent, and I could listen to it again and again. Congratulations to Joe and to his awesome parents! The real question is whether he is as good as his mom yet??

    • Haha – he is getting there! His talents are different than mine in some ways – he love jazz piano and tricky rhythms. Jazz is definitely not my forte – love to listen to it but he’s better at playing it! 😊

  2. Oh myβ€” Joe is very accomplished! That was just tremendous! Tricky piece too, with the irregular rhythm thrown in. Loved the dynamics and all of his technics!! Exceptional work, Joe!! Congratulations!!!

    • Thanks, Corinne! It is a tricky piece – and he worked very hard on it. He loves this uptempo / rhythmic songs for sure … when he picked this song, I knew it was the right piece for him!
